What are lab-grown diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are optically, chemically, physically, and thermally identical to mined diamonds, but they are produced above ground in a lab. In a similar vein, in the early 19th century, we used to collect naturally formed ice from the Arctic. However, with the invention of the freezer, we now create the same frozen water at home.

MYJS's lab-grown diamonds are produced using High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) technology that closely mimics the natural conditions in which diamonds are formed. The rough diamond is meticulously cut, polished into unique individual diamonds, and subsequently graded, laser-inscribed, and certified by the International Gemological Institute.

The primary distinction, however, lies in the cost. While natural diamonds can cost thousands of dollars per carat, our lab-grown diamonds are priced at just $800 AUD per carat.

Every single one of our lab diamonds are certified by the International Gemological Institute (IGI), the world’s largest gemological institute to provide its certified 4C gradings.

Colour

Colour evaluates the degree of colourlessness in a diamond on a scale of D-Z. The MYJS Lab Diamonds are always certified to be D/E in colour, and our finest collection is guaranteed to be D color.

Cut

Cut evaluates a diamond’s craftsmanship and the quality of its light behavior. Every MYJS Lab diamond is certified to have an excellent cut, excellent polish, and excellent symmetry.

Clarity

Clarity evaluates how clean or flawless a diamond is. The MYJS Lab diamonds are certified as Very Slightly Included (VS), and our finest collection is certified as Very Very Slightly Included (VVS).

Carat

The weight of a diamond is expressed in carats. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. For round-cut diamonds, a 1-carat diamond is approximately 6.5mm in diameter, while a 2-carat diamond is approximately 8.2mm in diameter.

Secondly, we operate as a fashion jewelry company and don't add the traditional markup common among fine jewelers. Moreover, unlike big international brands that has giant billboards, we focus on delivering value directly to you, without charging the costs of billboard ads to you.

Natural diamonds are priced based on rarity; the more flawless and colorless a diamond, the pricier it becomes. However, for lab-grown diamonds, where quality is controlled, we've adopted a fixed pricing model: $800AUD per carat, and $1000AUD per carat for our finest collection.

Much like natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds lose 50%+ of their value in the second-hand market. They are meant to be worn, not locked away. Since lab-grown diamonds are machine-produced, they inherently lack the rarity of investment grade natural diamonds, which can appreciate in value over time. The value argument for lab grown diamond is that instead of losing thousands of dollars in the case of natural diamond, you lose hundreds of dollars. Either way, apart from investment grade large natural diamonds, most diamonds should not be seen as an investment asset.

Absolutely. Standard commercial diamond testers will identify lab-grown diamonds as genuine as they are optically, chemically, physically, and thermally identical to mined diamonds. To differentiate between lab and natural, specialized lab diamond detector is required. Alternatively, it is much easier to check the stone under magnification for its IGI laser inscription and verify details online, which is what we see a lot of local jewellers do.

Lab-grown diamonds undergo grading just like natural diamonds, based on the four C's: Cut, Color, Carat, and Clarity.

We uphold rigorous quality standards. We believe that any lab diamond that's less than colorless, very slightly included, and doesn't have a triple excellent cut shouldn't be in the market. Therefore, our standard diamonds are D-E Color, VS1-VS2 Clarity, 3EX Cut, while our finest collection offers D Color, VVS1-VVS2 Clarity, 3EX Cut. We are also a firm believer that lab diamonds should never be sold without a certificate.

Moissanite is a distinct gem, typically less costly than diamonds. Originally a natural mineral, its limited natural availability led scientists to replicate it in labs. Though it may resemble a diamond, its color and hardness grades are lower.

Cubic zirconia, designed as a budget-friendly alternative to diamonds, is chemically distinct, softer, and lacks the diamond's signature brilliance. It's not a gemstone per se since it's not naturally occurring. Instead, it's synthesized from powdered zirconium and zirconium dioxide.
